The Rowley Center for Science & Engineering was identified in the Campus Master Plan as a priority capital project that will ensure Orange County Community College’s ability to accomplish its academic mission and accommodate growth at the Middletown campus. The new 100,000 gsf facility will house programs including Applied Technology, Biology, Science & Engineering. TWMLA prepared the site design, which required careful integration of the building into the historic campus green while preserving the topographical relationship to Wawayanda Creek.
The marriage of building and site to express sustainability and enhance the idea that learning happens everywhere is integral to the design. TWMLA worked closely with the project team to develop pedestrian plazas that infiltrate and treat runoff while enhancing the primary building entrances.
The innovative stormwater practices will also serve as working classrooms. The third-story green roof accommodates astronomy classes, which required special considerations to ambient building and site lighting.
